Richat Structure Expedition

Expedition to Explore the Richat Structure, Mauritania

Expedition Purpose

This two-week scientific expedition will focus on the Richat Structure—an enormous, circular geological formation in the Sahara Desert. Also known as the “Eye of the Sahara,” its origins remain debated. The expedition's goal is to gather data on the site’s geological layering, search for archaeological indicators of human presence, and document the region’s environmental and cultural context.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Nouakchott, Mauritania

  • Airport pickup and transfer to accommodation
     
  • Expedition briefing, gear check, safety overview
     
  • Meet the team and prep logistics
     

Day 2 – Travel to Ouadane (via Atar)

  • Early departure in 4x4 vehicles to the historic town of Ouadane
     
  • Overnight stay in Ouadane guesthouse
     
  • Cultural immersion and visit to local museum
     

Day 3 – Arrival at Base Camp (Richat Structure Perimeter)

  • Travel to campsite on the outer rings of the Richat Structure
     
  • Establish base camp and orient equipment
     
  • Satellite communications and medical protocols review
     

Days 4–10 – Field Research at the Richat Structure

  • Archaeological Survey:
     
    • Identify and map artifact clusters, record stratigraphy, conduct test pits
       
  • Geological Study:
     
    • Rock sampling, sediment analysis, ring formation assessment
       
  • Scientific Documentation:
     
    • Daily logs, GPS tagging, drone imagery, sketches
       
  • Journalistic Work:
     
    • Interviews, field notes, photos and video capture
       
  • Medic conducts daily check-ins and assists with physical demands
     

Day 11 – Data Consolidation and Camp Breakdown

  • Compile field notes and preliminary findings
     
  • Pack equipment and samples for secure transport
     
  • Final team debrief and group reflection
     

Day 12 – Return to Ouadane

  • Visit key archaeological site en route back
     
  • Rest and process materials
     
  • Share team highlights and media review
     

Day 13 – Return to Nouakchott

  • Travel day and optional group dinner
     
  • Prepare for departure and shipping logistics
     

Day 14 – Departures

  • Individual airport transfers
     
  • Expedition officially concludes
